About 15 years ago I was given the amazing opportunity to work in India doing a fast track promotion process with Zurich Bank for three weeks. Being a single mum, I’m sure you can imagine how much I struggled with leaving my girls at home, but after a lot of tears I waved goodbye and got on the plane to Bangalore.
Let me start off by saying that this wasn’t an all inclusive, all expenses paid for business retreat in a beautiful 5* hotel (I wish!). For three weeks I lived in the slums, as you can imagine I was totally out of my comfort zone. But as we all know, once you step out of your comfort zone you are opening yourself up to new and often frightening experiences which will later result in creating lifelong memories and lessons that will stick with you forever.
To say I learnt a lot is an understatement; those three weeks away from home changed my life!
But one of the most important messages I took away from the experience is the Indian Model. The Indian Model is all about using and employing lots of people. If you spread the work you spread the wealth that comes with it. Share skills and share the love. If you have one big project you should employ different people to do each little task, that way, more people will be able to make a living and provide for their families. Remembering this made me think – Why are so many people wary of outsourcing in their business?
One of my favourite phrases is – Do what you do best and outsource the rest. I do truly do believe and live by that. I have such a brilliant outsourced support team helping me with my business; I outsource my Email Marketing, Social Media, Advert Marketing, Website Management, PR, Design, Printing and Copy-writing – and guess what? I still find myself feeling swamped with work! I even have my own support team for daily life and house chores. I have a Coach, Cleaner Ironer, Gardener, Handyman and Painter!
I know plenty of people that try and do it all, of course, some manage it but more often than not, the flame that burns twice as bright burns half as long. You can’t do it all by yourself, it’s just not sustainable. Have a support team that you can rely on and your business will blossom because you will have the time and the effort to work on what’s important to you!
