5 Ways to Get Out of Your Own Head and Get Over the Overwhelm

First things first, repeat after me: I am not alone. I am not alone. I AM NOT ALONE! Although the stress of running a business on your own can feel incredibly isolating, it’s worth trying to remember that the majority of people go through stages of work-related anxiety at some point.

Working for yourself can often feel lonely and this can make you feel overwhelmed with the mass amount on work piling up. Not having anyone who you can turn to can seriously increase those feelings of stress and anxiety.

Try and take a second to recognise a bad day when you’ve had one and make a conscious effort to reach out to a friend or family member who you can talk to. Sharing your worries will help you overcome the stressful times at work.

The temptation is always there to take on more work. However, if you work alone or with a small team, you MUST watch out for yourself. Spreading yourself too thinly as you work all hours of the day (and night!) is only good for one thing: a business burnout.

Learning how to say no does not mean that you are a failure, or that you don’t know how to manage your time properly. Saying no is actually the smart way to fast-track your success as you prioritise activities that will bring you the most benefit.

With your business goals planted firmly in your mind – look at each new request with a critical eye and ask yourself whether this particular piece of work takes you one step closer to getting the results you want.

Feeling overwhelmed at work is a telltale sign you have too much on your plate. It can be hard to figure out where your time goes during the day, so identifying what tasks to delegate can be difficult.

Start by keeping a list of everything you do each day. Jot down each task and the time it takes you do do each thing. Be brutally honest and even write down how long you spend scrolling on Facebook or Insta! Once you’ve built up a picture on how you spend your week, you’ll quickly be able to locate the areas that take up a lot of your time and be able to delegate them properly.

I found that it’s the creative content creation tasks such as blogging, writing emails and social media posts that often get overlooked because a business owner doesn’t have enough time. That’s why I suggest that you find a brilliant intern or assistant to take these things off your hands, allowing you to focus on running your business.
If you’re reading this and tutting at me thinking you can’t afford to. I say, you can’t afford not to!

A scatter gun approach to your work is not going to be very sustainable in the long run. You’ll end up feeling burnt out as you knee-jerk react to everything that comes your way. I enjoy batching my to-do list and blocking out sections on my calendar to concentrate on one – or a very similar – task only.

For example, you could spend mornings and early afternoons on client work. Then, block out several hours a week on creating and scheduling your social media. This method will help you to feel much more productive and you’ll benefit from seeing greater progress.

If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed because of work, one of the hardest things to do and one the most important – is to try to take some time out to relax and unplug. We can quickly find ourselves working all hours to meet deadlines, writing blog posts or keep on top of social media until it all comes crashing down.

If you are a member of my Facebook Group you’ll know I’m a firm believer in #SelfareSaturay! Take time to run that bath, light that candle and relax with a brilliant book. Or, pull on your trainers and head out for a walk with the kids and dog to get the blood flowing. Whatever you choose to do, make sure the phone is tucked out of sight and you truly allow yourself to step away from your business and the constant pressure to be ‘on’.
