Running your own business is the dream of many people. Being your own boss, setting your own hours and working tirelessly on something that you actually love doing. But it’s certainly not for the faint hearted. Long hours, no guarantee of income and managing yourself all take sheer grit and determination. Do you have what it takes to succeed? Here are some of the top qualities you need to run a business, and a successful one at that.

Self discipline. Whether you work from home or have an office, self discipline is the number 1 characteristic you need to get ahead and make a success of your business. You have to understand it won’t just be a Monday to Friday 9-5 when you start. Sure, as your business develops you can start to set your hours and have control but in the early days, you have to work around the clock, to establish yourself and your business and get the ground running. You have to be able to knuckle down every day, even when your business may be struggling. You have to keep working at and in your business, which when you have little money coming in in the early days can be tricky.

Can you do it ALL? In the early stages, you generally have to do it all. And I mean, all. The decision making , PR, the marketing, the design, the management, the social media, the manufacture, the promotion, the bookkeeping, the planning. The whole lot. It takes organisational skills to a whole new level. Stationery, notepads and diaries will be your best friend here. But as your business grows and you can afford to do so, you can soon “do what you do best and outsource the rest.”

Determination. You have to be determined to succeed. When you’re having a really crap day, you have to have the willpower and inner strength to get up, carry on and fight for what you believe in. You can have the best business plan in the world, but if you don’t have the determination to make it a success, you might as well have an empty page. I umped on a call recently and heard the speaker saying it was 75{2d32fbf16b5807558623e5bf463bab46fd607d7552aacb626ed4776260a95749} mindset and 25{2d32fbf16b5807558623e5bf463bab46fd607d7552aacb626ed4776260a95749} technology to be successful  – interesting don’t you think? Mindset is so so so important.

Willpower. You will get invites to networking events, days out, lunches and housework won’t have looked so appealing for a long time. But, you have to set yourself goals, working hours and an actionable to do list to ensure your work comes first. Yes, you absolutely need time off, breaks throughout the day and should network at events that suit you and your business, but don’t use these as an excuse to get away from your laptop. Finding the balance is critical, maybe network once or twice a month, have Friday afternoon as your ‘free’ time to do chores, run errands and pop out if needs be and be strict with yourself.

Running a business can be an absolute joy. Yes, as with everything in life, there are difficult times but when you start to make it and can look back and learn from your journey so far, it really is the best thing you can achieve.
