It’s Okay to Press the Reset Button

According to sports network platform Strava, there is a certain day on which people who have made fitness resolutions are most likely to give them up: the aptly-named Quitter’s Day. Did you know that this year’s Quitters Day was Sunday 19 January? Two days later than in 2019. So how did you do? Did you give up on your New Year’s resolutions and intentions? Instead of beating yourself up over it, why don’t you hit the reset button and give yourself another chance?

February is usually one of the least favoured months of the year (I’m not surprised! It’s cold, grey and summer seems a lifetime away), which is why it’s the perfect time to add a refreshing splash of positivity in your life. If you’ve got the winter blues and you’re in need of a healthy dose of optimism, do something for yourself today. Here are 5 simple ways to hit the reset button on life:

1. Unplug

Social media is addictive, I get it, I’m often caught with my phone in hand, scrolling through my news-feed, having a look at whose doing what! While it’s important for us to stay connected, it’s just as important (if not more), for us to step away from technology and take in the sights and sounds of our surroundings. Browsing through Facebook looking at photos of a friend’s recent trip to Spain might be fine on occasion, but if your downtime is spent keeping up with other people’s lives through social media, it’s probably time to put your phone down (far enough away so you can’t hear the “ding” of the texts coming in!) and enjoy more human interaction.

2. Spend time with your best friend

Best friends… They love us just the way we are with all our faults, weird mannerisms and little idiosyncrasies are so important in our lives. But quite often we put these relationships on the back burner because life just gets in the way. We’re all busy; life gets hectic, what with running a business, looking after the kids and a partner, how can we possibly make way for “girl time”?

Listen to me, no matter how cluttered your world is with piles of things you have to do, you need to take time to be with your friends. Socialise, laugh, share and vent, it’s free therapy! So, even if it’s a quick cup of coffee once or twice a month, it will re-energise you, trust me!

3. Get outside

Nothing will refresh your energy more than a healthy dose of fresh air. And, during this time of year when the weather can be dreary and cold, it’s even more important to fend off the seasonal depression that can hit us due to a lack of vitamin D!

Grab your favourite trainers and just start walking! Take a hike with your kids, go on a bike ride or join your friend when they walk the dog. The fresh air in your lungs will work wonders on your mindset and leave you feeling fresh and rejuvenated.

4. Take action

We all have a long list of projects we want to accomplish. For some, it might be cleaning out the linen closet that hasn’t been touched since you gave birth to your eldest child 18 years ago. For others, it might be tackling the garage that’s just become a glorified closet for junk (No judgement, we’ve all been there!)

Finishing projects, which are often so difficult to start, can actually lead to making us feel better. In fact, neuroscience has found that when we finish tasks we actually get a dopamine rush. So, now’s a perfect time. Pick a project… Any project and just take action. Ignore the constant barrage of interruptions and focus on how great you’ll feel when you can finally check it off your to-do list.

5. Look forward to something

So you’ve taken action and completed something on your to-do list, brilliant! Now it’s time to give yourself something to look forward to. In the haze of our never ending errands, our lives can become dull and monotonous. Take a moment to think about what makes you happy, like truly happy. Sometimes it’s the simplest things in life that bring us the greatest joy and comfort like a warm cup of coffee on a cold morning, a brisk walk to take in the fresh air, a sweet treat from the bakery or buying tickets to see your favourite singer.

Whether it’s something small like lunch with a friend or something big like your dream holiday, give yourself a much-needed boost by planning ahead and giving yourself something to look forward to every single day.
