Strategies to Stop Overthinking and Start Goal-Setting

I’m a serial over thinker. I can’t count the times I’ve found myself awake at 2am stressing over something that I can’t even help!

But after a lifetime of struggling with over-thinker-itis, what I’ve noticed is that happy people don’t overthink things. They decide to stick with something and just go with it, taking action without all the niggles that comes with overthinking.

The people that we normally look up to, the people that get ahead, don’t get there by wasting their time endlessly worrying about every little thing and standing still, paralysed on the spot. Learning to stop overthinking is vital if you want to live a long and happy life! That’s why I’ve put together this blog, to give you strategies that will help you get there.

1. Take baby steps

Our dreams and goals tend to intimidate us because, let’s face it… they’re huge right? You’d need to be a giant to conquer them, and that’s never going to happen…

My advice is to take action today. Start by taking teeny tiny baby steps and set a pace that works for you. Too many people get disheartened because they don’t feel like they are getting anywhere but try not to fixate on doing everything right now.  Trust me, you will grow slowly but surely.

Don’t compare yourself to others during this process. Everybody has their own stories and backgrounds, their own strengths and weaknesses, and their own rhythm. By concentrating on your own journey and taking small steps towards your goals, you’ll see that you’ll end up being the giant you always wanted to be.

2. You don’t know all the answers

Nobody knows all the answers to life and no one is supposed to! Isn’t it the unknown that makes life interesting?

Imagine if you knew when you would die, how would you spend your life then? Dangerously or cautiously?  What if you knew that you will never reach the goal you want to reach? Would you be able to bear the truth? Enjoy the process and stop overthinking the outcome and consequences.

3. Have a goal-setting session

Like I said before, we often stress over things outside of our present control. That’s why it’s important to consider whether you can do anything right now to resolve any issues that are making you overthink.

If you can, make a list of steps you can take that will help the situation. For example, I made a mistake during a presentation. My list would include: email attendees a clarification email, schedule extra time to prepare for my next presentation, etc. Goal-setting is key!

4. Don’t be afraid of jumping

Keep moving and don’t be afraid to make mistakes because you’re still learning. If you’re one of my clients, you’ll know that one of my favourite mantras is “fail forward!” and I advise you to do just that.

Be quick to make decisions that will bring you closer to your goal. If they end up being the wrong ones then no worries, you will learn from them and do better next time. Create a vision board of what you want and when you want to achieve it – it will help you keep your eyes on the prize.

5. Be kind to yourself

We’re often harsher on ourselves than we are with others. For example, if a colleague had a presentation slip-up, you probably (hopefully!) wouldn’t label them as a terrible worker for life. You’d think they were just having an off-day… But how would you act towards yourself if you slipped up? Berate or criticise yourself all day? – likely.

That’s why I think we need to make more of an effort to be objective. Consider the advice you’d give to a friend or loved one in your situation, then try to take that same empathetic tone with yourself. Remember, even the most successful people suffer occasional setbacks (think Oprah and J.K Rowling.) What defines them is not letting those setbacks throw them off track.
